- Bo-Kaap with its colourful houses: one of the most photographed sections of the city. In the 17th century the Dutch installed this township for their slaves, imported from east India and Malaysia (hence the nickname Cape Malay Quarter). A Sheikh exiled by the Dutch spread the islam amongst these slaves, and so the first muslim quarter in Cape Town was born. It remained as such after emancipation and through Apartheid.
